Thoughts from the APPLES VISTA

By Carolyn Byrne

As many of you know, APPLES invited alumni and friends back to Chapel Hill last month to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Though I spent weeks pouring over historical photos, timelines, and videos in preparation for the event, it wasn’t until I had the opportunity to stand back from the crowd that I realized just how amazing APPLES is. I am truly fortunate to be a part of the APPLES staff. In meeting so many alumni who valued their APPLES experience and have carried that with them after leaving Carolina, it is no surprise APPLES is growing every year and is now a nationally recognized service-learning program by U.S. News & World Report.

In my second year with APPLES, I continue to work closely with Service-Learning Courses, Alternative Spring Break, and Internship programs as well as increase and deepen community partnerships. I am confident my time with APPLES has prepared me well for the next step in my professional journey and I can look forward to supporting this work externally, as a VISTA alumna, in the future.

Thank you for making APPLES such an important part of my life; it is the amazing work of students and alumni who continue to make this organization what it is today.

Three former APPLES treasurers have created the Treasurers Annual Reinvestment Pledge (TARP) to encourage alumni to financially support APPLES current and future programs. Their gift will specifically help the Service-Learning Initiative leaders expand their three-day program for first-year students to include an alternative spring break experience as well as a fall course in the future.

The APPLES Alternative Break Program offers students the opportunity to travel beyond the Carolina community to learn about social justice and community-based challenges facing our world through first hand experiences. Dane Emmerling joins APPLES as the new alternative break program coordinator and brings new perspectives, ambitions, and insight to the job. The launch of a new Collaborative Grants program offers a unique opportunity for APPLES to assist with the increase of break opportunities through other UNC student organizations.
